Oh my gosh! I remember those cheese graters! We use to have one and I always loved turning that handle to crank out all that cheese! Terrible thing to clean though, or so I remember. Must have been very late 70's that I recall us having one. I was probably 6 or 7 years old. I kinda wish we still had it.

This is one of the craziest stories I have heard. What ever happened to freedom of parenthood? It was a bigger insult to the children to have to be checked for sexual abuse. Isn't that invading their privacy? And to be taken from a family who clearly loves them and be thrown into a stranger's house is truly the worst nightmare imaginable. My heart goes out to this poor family and those precious little girls.

Ahhh yes. Sunday gravy.

I don't cook much...mostly a weekend breakfast or two. Grilling for sure. The rest left up to Trish. But, Sunday gravy...that's for me to be in charge of (and we all know how I love to be in charge!). Trish and the kids love it (although I do admit I need to be better about the family dinner part of it all). When Trish was pregnant, that seemed to be all she wanted...Sunday or not! My friend Craig is always trying to hit me up for a batch or two...stopping by now and again...Hey, you got any meatballs in the freezer??? Even my wife's family (Irish) have expressed their delite in this delicacy passed down from my Mom to us, which she got from her Mom and Grandmother, etc. etc. I try to let the kids particpate once in a while, but I have to admit, unlike my sister who has the patience of our mother with her kids, I cannot deal with the chaos on a regular occassion. Summer is a time for bar-b-ques and picnics, but now that fall is here, there is a chill in the air, football season has kicked off and the world series is within reach of our local favorite teams, Sunday once again become time for Gravy.

Jenny, thanks for sharing this...it really brings back a lot of fun memories of our childhood. You have captured it so well, I can see/smell/taste everything so vividly!

Jen, wonderful! Of course back in the day (as they say) when I was a child, Sunday dinner started at noon sharp. We started off with antispasto, soup. A break and then the macaroni (homemade by our Grandmother) with the meat from the gravy. After that it was salad to clear the palate. Another break and then a dinner of roast chicken or beef with potatoes and veggies. Then another break in the action (these breaks were so that the girls could do the dishes. my earliest memories are of my daddy saying - here honey, stand on a stool and do a good job, he was never sure how well my Grandmother saw to clean up her kitchen. Obviously she saw well enough to cook (but once she did loose her brooch in the brocolla!). Desert, and coffee followed. Then cards. Then more snacking. Finally home to watch the Wonderful World of Disney. A wonderful day with family and wonderful memories to build on! xo

Gravey, that king of foods. But that only help set the stage for the most important part of Sunday dinner-The Family Together--being able to express ideas, tell everyone what was going on, teasing one another, shareing and bonding,it was a magical time that I miss. Not the food , but I miss that too, but the having the family together once a week and knowing that the bond being made would last a lifetime.
